Minister Treacy Presents ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems Certificate to Buckeye Technologies of Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork

Mr. Noel Treacy T.D., Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce has this week presented the International Standards Organisation (ISO) 14001 Certification for Environmental Management Systems, to Buckeye Technologies of Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork.

Buckeye Technologies Ireland is a subsidiary of Buckeye Technologies Incorporated, which manufactures specialised cellulose and absorbent products in the US, Canada and Europe. Buckeye in Ireland at its Ringaskiddy Plant in Co. Cork manufactures non-woven air-laid absorbent paper which is applied in products such as diapers, feminine hygiene products, wipes and mops. The company employs 125 people in Cork and its products are sold on world markets.

The ISO 14001 Environmental Management System provides organisations with the elements of an effective environmental management system which can be integrated with other management requirements.

The ISO 14001 Certificate verifies that the organisation’s environmental performance meets, and will continue to meet, legal and environmental policy requirements, as well as specifying the requirements.

Minister Treacy said on the occasion of the presentation of the ISO14001 Certificate: "Great credit is due to the team at Buckeye Technologies Ireland on achieving the ISO 14001 Standard, as the success of the system depends on commitment from all levels and functions within the company, especially top management. The company can now provide an example to other organisations that it practices sound environmental policies with a recognised environmental management system in place".

Minister Treacy also acknowledged the efforts of the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) in registering Irish companies to the Standard. This doubly benefits the environment and individual organisations. "I congratulate everybody involved", added Minister Treacy.
