The following new procedures have now been agreed for employment permit applications in respect of Nurses and Doctors.

Nurses undergoing Adaptation

• An Employment Permit will issue for a period of up to 2 years which will include the Adaptation Period on foot of an application where an employer / employee relationship exists. This will mean that the applicant will have to submit supporting documentation from An Bord Altranais together with a copy of the employment contract and specify where the adaptation will take place.

• The type of permit being applied for will depend on the duration of the job offer and on the starting salary after adaptation (i.e. < than or > than ¤30,000) and this must be specified in the employment contract.

• The Permit will then issue to the employee and be copied to the employer. The Permit will specify the location of employment and where the adaptation will take place if a different location is being used for that purpose.

• A condition on the issue of the Permit will be an obligation on the employer to notify this Department in circumstances where a person fails their adaptation. In those circumstances the Permit will likely be revoked and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform notified accordingly by this Department.

Doctors

There are 3 categories for consideration under this heading:

• Interns

• Fully Registered Doctors with the Irish Medical Council

• Temporary Registered Doctors

This Department will deal with 1and 2 above through the employment permit system.

Temporary Registered Doctors

There is no change to their position, they will not require employment permits and they can continue to obtain a stamp from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

Labour Market Needs Test

No labour market needs test will apply to work permit applications in respect of Nurses and Doctors.
